Energy flow in ecosystem is best explained by Raymond Lindeman (1942). He studied energy flow in pond ecosystem and described the rate and efficiency of flow of energy at different trophic level.
Sun is ultimate source of energy on earth. In his study, he found that out of total solar energy (118,872 gcal/cm2/year), only 111 gcal/cm2/year is accumulated in the producers in form of gross production (net production plus respiration). Rest of the solar radiation is left-unutilized. This is roughly 0.10 %.
