Ecological pyramids

Ecological pyramids are graphical representation of trophic structure and function in ecosystem. In ecological pyramid, producer level constitute the base of the pyramid and the successive levels make the apex.
Ecological pyramids are of three types
  1. Pyramid of number
  2. Pyramid of biomass
  3. Pyramid of energy

Pyramid of number

It shows the number of individual at each trophic level.

Pyramid of energy

It shows the total amount of energy transferred at each trophic level. Here, Sun is the ultimate source of energy on earth. At each trophic level, only 10 % of the accumulated energy is transferred as each successive trophic level. Rest of the energy is utilized in respiration and reproduction. It is always upright
